Sony's PlayStation Network outage is now on day two, preventing PlayStation 3 online gaming. Did they try turning it off and on again?
PS3 owners were greeted with a grim welcome Thursday morning when they found themselves unable to log into Sony's online system. Unfortunately, the outage might continue into the weekend. According to the PlayStation Blog, the network could be down for one or two more days as Sony works to nail down the issue.
Details on the cause of the PSN crash haven't been shared yet. At one point a news site tried to pin this on Free Realms by claiming the downtime coincided with the game's PS3 launch. Which by "coincided," they must have meant "30 days after." Some additional sites ran with the story, but so far there doesn't seem to be any direct connection between the game and the service issues.
A more popular theory bouncing around the interwebs is that this is the result of a cyber attack. This hasn't been confirmed, but it's a logical point to speculate. The system was taken down earlier in the month by the infamous Anonymous hactivist group to protest Sony's lawsuit against PlayStation hackers George Hotz and Alexander. Anonymous eventually called off the attack because innocent gamers were ultimately the ones suffering.
