thumb_ss04_fullBioWare isn't checking out early for the week, posting three updates for Star Wars: The Old Republic today. You can watch a video that shows how TOR's biggest fans reacted to a trip to BioWare Austin, read about how the sounds of the upcoming blockbuster game come to life, or just check out some of the best fan-created art.

Representatives from the biggest The Old Republic fan sites got to visit BioWare Austin and play TOR for two whole days, at the end of which most of them could only say, "This is the game we're looking for."

Watching this week's Mythbusters gave me some insight into how sounds for movies are created and reading this article by TOR's Audio Designer, Scott Morton, provides even more info about this oft-overlooked part of game development:

A great example of source layers is with the TIE Fighter from the first Star Wars trilogy. Believe it or not—the core sound Ben Burtt used for the screaming engine was actually an elephant call! In our game, the Bounty Hunter’s Rail Shot uses a combination of interesting layers. A number of these sounds incorporate other noises that have been distorted or otherwise altered using computers, such as the tail end of an explosion that was processed and delayed to create the echo of the shot, or the time-stretched sounds of smoke that were used to make the entire effect sound more “metallic.” Other sounds were much more simplistic, like the sound of a solid object striking wood.

Finally, this week's Fan Friday showcases some of the most creative TOR fans in the galaxy. Because pretty pictures make us smile. And so do grungy ones of a rancor stalking its prey:
