Gardening: A primer by a Grandmaster Gardener
First, visit the gardening NPC in Wizard City. As you level, there are more advanced NPC's in Krokotopia, Mooshu and Celestia, each selling better seeds and spells. Buy some basic seeds from the first NPC (dandelions, etc) and get started. Pick a clear area that fits into your land area of your house. I've never used the planters offered as I have a house for each of my active characters.
You must buy the basic spells as well, since the plants will get infected, need water, sun, etc. To succeed, I visit my plants twice a day, once early and once late and fix whatever's needed. The infection spells work in a circular pattern, so arrange your garden in a circle so the spell covers your entire layout. Don't over plant as you'll use up your energy points fixing your plants. These are the same points needed for your pets, so pet training and planting will really stretch your points to the max.
As plants mature, they'll give you some gold, some treasure cards and some other goodies. Your biggest payoff will be when the plant is completely mature and done (then it disappears). Note: you must be out of the planting mode to harvest your plants, in other words, in the normal playing mode. Don't forget to buy your little gnomes from the first NPC and place them around your plants appropriately. Some plants also flourish when next to some others so pay attention to the notes on the seeds. Try to ramp up the value of your seeds, i.e. you won't get much credit planting a level one plant when your level 6, so push the envelope, planting higher value seeds until you level. If you have crowns to burn and in a hurry, check the plants available for crowns. They will speed your leveling.
I think the devs did a great job animating the plants and flowers, making it amusing and colorful, for instance the 'Elvis' plant that mutters 'thank you very much'. Have fun with your garden and be prepared to spend some of your gold on making it special.
