Upgrading Your RAM

Everything You Need to Know About Desktop Memory

Understandably, entertainment expenses like computer games are usually the first thing cut out of the average budget when tough economic times arrive. When it comes to your gaming rig, in many cases upgrading a component or two can boost your performance at a fraction of the cost of replacing the entire machine. Adding memory is one of the easiest and most common ways to extend the life of your desktop gaming PC, but the growing varieties of RAM can make it a befuddling process for newcomers.

Pressing All the Right Buttons

steelseries7G_thumbThe standard keyboards that come with most computers, derived largely from layouts used on typewriters going all the way back to the 1800s, were never designed for gaming. Nevertheless, because most video games involve pushing buttons of some sort, keyboards have been adapted to the purpose quite well. Of course, there is always room for improvement, so manufacturers now offer a variety of keyboards tailored specifically to the needs of gamers.

Dual Wielding Video Cards

paladinUtilizing two video cards is a lot like dual wielding in most fantasy games: just because you get more out of that second dagger doesn't mean you're hitting for 100% of the damage possible. The same is true for two video cards as well: the boost in performance you get from running two video cards in a system can be up to 80% (typically it runs 50-60%), if the game you're playing takes advantage of it. If not, you might not see any improvements (or, in very rare cases, it may make things worse if the game's not optimized for it). But if you're short on cash and are looking for an economical way to upgrade your computer, an older video card costs half the price of what it did a year ago (and will be even cheaper if it's a used card).

Cooling your system and keeping it quiet

Chimera-Features_thumbWhen people newer to building or maintaining their own computers think about upgrades, things like new monitors and faster processors come to mind. It's the simple things though, like keeping your computer cool, that make a huge difference and should not be overlooked. Systems that are constantly overheating become unstable, and the lifespan of your aging computer may be cut short and cost you more money in the long run since you're replacing parts more frequently. So how do you keep your computer cool even during those intense PvP battles?
