Mythic/EA's Warhammer: Age of Reckoning MMO, based on Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy Battles miniatures game met with middling success following an explosive launch. The next logical step, then, would seem to be an MMO based on GW's futuristic Warhammer 40,000 miniatures game. And such a project appears to be in the works, courtesy of THQ, and might be previewed at this year's E3.
According to web site Computer & Video Games, THQ head Brian Farrell had this to say in a phone interview:
The highest ranking revenue opportunity for us clearly is the Warhammer 40k MMO. Again, I encourage you to come by and see what we are seeing at E3 with that when we fully unveil it, but we think we are going to have a very competitive MMO.
Farrell went on to say that the game is being developed in THQ's Austin studio. You can read the full story here.
While fantasy is the standard fare for MMOs, it's undeniable that Warhammer 40K has far outperformed its fantasy counterpart for some time, topping the sales lists for non-collectible miniatures games for some time, including the first three quarters of 2009, according to ICv2.com (here, here, and here).
