After years of speculation, 38 Studios has finally thrown back the veil of secrecy shrouding its hotly anticipated RPG -- but it's not quite the one MOG readers have been waiting for. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, previously known as "Project Mercury," will be a single-player RPG set in the world of Amalur, the same game world, created by fantasy legends R. A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane, that the company's upcoming MMORPG, codenamed "Project Copernicus," will also be set in. The project's lead developer, Ken Rolston, was also the lead designer for Bethesda Softworks' highly acclaimed Elder Scrolls series of games, including Morrowind and Oblivion.
So what does this mean for the Project Copernicus MMO? Well, the world should be similar, even if the story isn't exactly identical. Scrounging through the game's official site, you can see that Amalur doesn't exactly look like the friendliest place ever, with the PC being left for dead right off the start. (Think Dragon Age, rather than Lord of the Rings.) We can speculate a little on the gameplay for the MMO, too, since 38 Studios says Reckoning will boast of "unrivaled RPG action combat, seamlessly integrating magical and melee attacks into an innovative and visceral experience." If the company can carry that over into the MMO -- perhaps providing an Oblivion-like combat system -- then we can't wait.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning releases in fall of 2011 and will be published by Electronic Arts.
