Sony Online Entertainment recently announced the upcoming launch of a new free version of EverQuest II later this year. Branded as EverQuest II Extended, the "new" game follows closely in the footsteps of Turbine, who turned Dungeons & Dragons Online into a F2P game last year and will do the same with The Lord of the Rings Online later this year. Unlike Turbine's titles, though, EQ2 Extended will not simply add new players to the current servers but will operate concurrently and separately from the non-Extended game.
According to the official press release, EQ2 Extended accounts will be limited in many ways, and there will be a marketplace where players can buy in-game items for real money. All zones through the Shadow Odyssey, including the recently released New Halas, will be available for free, players new and old will realize a graphical update to the game and, according to the official press release, "experience a new and improved character progression through the Golden Path while creating their own legend with the Storyteller adventure journal that visually displays quest exploration."
The beta testing for EverQuest II Extended starts on Aug. 17. You can read the announcement here and read the FAQ here.
