Putting the "team" in "steampunk"
By Brandon Cushenberry and Jason Ruper
Welcome to Chrysalis, a unique fantasy/steampunk MMO world where the technological Republic of Rogwel and the magical Kingdom of Elerd fight for control over land and resources. At the forefront of their war is the most valuable resource, Neo Steam, which has unlimited potential in the advancement of both science and magic. Join in the fight and help defend your nation!
As an inhabitant of Chrysalis, you can take many forms; Humans and Elves roam the land, as expected, but they're joined by the Pom, a race of small, cuddly, and very ferocious little mechanics; the seductive Taxn Humans, who come from a distant continent; and three very unique beast races: the Lupine, the Tarune, and the Lyell. Which will you choose?
Let's take a look at the world of Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent, the first title from Atlus Online, the interactive entertainment division of acclaimed publisher Atlus U.S.A., Inc.

In a Class of Its Own
In addition to its steampunk setting, the character classes of Neo Steam help set it apart from other MMOs. Whether you join Rogwel or Elerd, you will have four base classes to choose from: Warrior, Scout, Mystic, and Machinist. However, upon reaching level 10, you can specialize into one of two sub-classes, both of which are different for each nation, making for a total of sixteen classes to choose from!
Warriors are the standard plate wearers with swords, axes, maces, shields, and the like. At level 10, Rogwel's Warriors can become Vanguards, who are powerful melee tanks, or Justicars, who use holy magic. Meanwhile, Elerd's Warriors can become Crusaders and wield powerful offensive spells in addition to their tanking capabilities, or they can become Templars and learn summoning magic.
Scouts wear medium armor and use swords and bows, but when you specialize, you can pursue either a more hunter-esque role or a more rogue-like one. On the rogue side of things, Elerd's Shadowreavers get useful abilities like teleportation and healing to supplement their offensive swordplay, while Rogwel's Nightstalkers can slather oils on their blades to add status ailments to their strikes. For those wanting to specialize into a ranged hunter class and learn to tame beasts, Elerd's got you covered with their Warden class, and Rogwel's got their Striders.
Mystics are the spellcasters and summoners of Chrysalis. Elerd's Arcanists wield fire magic, and their Evokers can summon powerful creatures of legend. Rogwel's Mystics can specialize into either ice-based Sorcerers or Animators who summon living machines.
Finally, Machinists are one of the most unique classes in any MMO. These guys craft anything from earrings and two-handed axes, to
destructive siege engines and automated turrets! On Elerd, you can choose between an Artificer or a Gadgeteer, and on Rogwel, you can choose between a Galvanist or a Tinkerer. The Machinist classes are key to customizing your gear, and in Neo Steam, customization is what it's all about.
Trains, Planes, and Steam-Mobiles
There are a number of transportation options available to players. Steam balloon docks and subway stations dot the landscape, providing faster travel between towns and wilderness outposts, while venturing to other continents is achieved by massive zeppelins, which can be seen flying overhead. Of course, if traveling to the ends of the earth is your thing, then there are submarine operators standing by! And finally, should you prefer a more private means of transportation, there are various mechanical and live mounts which follow in the quirky, fantasy/steampunk vein of the world.
Needless to say, traveling around Chrysalis should not be much of a problem. There are even rumors of cannons being used as a transportation method on some continents!
Dress to Impress
While Neo Steam is completely free to play from start to finish, Atlus Online will be offering a number of paid ways for players to enhance their experience. In addition to an optional, tiered subscription service, players will have the opportunity to purchase in-game items through a premium item shop.
Basic convenience items include extra potions, experience boosters, and items to respec your character, but there are also more specialized offerings, such as mounts and vanity costume items. Players will be able to mix and match different quirky accessories to create a truly unique look for their character. These items range from the standard pirate hats and angel wings to such things as a plunger that constantly plunges your head, a bag full of kittens (with one hanging onto the edge for dear life as you run around), and even a rocket engine strapped onto your back.
